10 Cyber Security Best Practices for Small and Medium Businesses in India

Cyber attacks are no longer a problem only for large enterprises. Small and medium businesses in India are now regular targets because attackers know they often have weaker protection. A single phishing email, an unpatched computer or a weak password can lead to data loss, ransomware, downtime and a damaged reputation.

The good news is that most attacks can be prevented with a few well-planned steps. Below are ten practical cyber security best practices that every growing business should follow.

1. Protect your network with a next-generation firewall

A basic internet router is not a security device. A next-generation firewall (NGFW) inspects traffic, blocks malicious websites and applications, and stops intrusion attempts before they reach your users. Firewalls from brands such as Fortinet, Sophos and SonicWall also provide secure VPN access for remote staff. Learn more about our firewall solutions.

2. Keep every device updated

Most successful attacks exploit known vulnerabilities for which a fix already exists. Enable automatic updates for Windows, macOS, browsers and business software, and do not forget servers, printers, CCTV recorders and network devices. Replace systems that no longer receive security updates.

3. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication

Stolen or guessed passwords remain one of the easiest ways into a company. Ask every user to use long, unique passwords and turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for email, Microsoft 365, VPN, banking and admin accounts. MFA alone blocks the vast majority of account takeover attempts.

4. Secure your email

Email is the number one entry point for phishing, fake invoices and malware. Use an email security solution that filters spam, detects phishing links and scans attachments, and configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for your domain so attackers cannot easily send emails in your name. See our email security services.

5. Install modern endpoint protection

Traditional antivirus is not enough against today’s ransomware. Endpoint protection with behaviour monitoring can detect suspicious activity, isolate infected computers and roll back damage. Manage all endpoints from one central console so nothing is left unprotected.

6. Follow the 3-2-1 backup rule

Keep at least three copies of important data, on two different types of storage, with one copy offsite or in the cloud. Make sure at least one backup cannot be changed or deleted by ransomware, and test restores regularly. Our data backup and recovery and disaster recovery solutions help you get this right.

7. Give users only the access they need

Not every employee needs admin rights or access to every folder. Apply the principle of least privilege, remove accounts of people who have left, and separate guest Wi-Fi and CCTV devices from your business network using VLANs.

8. Train your employees

People are your first line of defence. Short, regular awareness sessions help staff recognise phishing emails, fake calls, suspicious links and USB drives. Encourage them to report anything unusual immediately instead of ignoring it.

9. Prepare an incident response plan

Decide in advance who will do what if an attack happens: how to isolate affected systems, whom to inform, how to restore data and how to communicate with customers. In India, organisations are also expected to report certain cyber incidents to CERT-In within the prescribed time, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 makes protecting personal data a legal responsibility.

10. Review and audit your security regularly

Security is not a one-time project. Review firewall rules, user accounts, backups and patch status at least every quarter, and get an external security review once a year. A managed security partner can monitor your systems continuously and alert you before a small issue becomes a crisis.
